WaveImage is based on the wavelet transform which is widely recognized as a superior technique for the compression of two-dimensional images when compared to the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT). The state-of-the-practice JPEG image compression utilities commonly used today employ the FFT and are subject to compression artifacts and image distortion at higher compression ratios (typically 30 to 1 and greater).

The new JPEG 2000 standard (scheduled for formal release in January 2001) will also be based on the wavelet transform.
